This experiential program gives students a unique exploration of U.S. culture and language with a mix of classroom learning, cultural field trips, classroom visits, local family visits, conversation partners, and other interactions with the campus and community. The program is held at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, located in the safe, friendly, and beautiful city of Menomonie, Wisconsin.  

Students are enrolled in 2 classes, for a total of 3 credits:  Oral Communication Workshop (2 credits) & Exploring U.S. Cultures (1 credit). Students have 3.5 hours of class each day. Other academic activities typically include: conversation hour (1 hour per week), major-related meetings, and university classroom visits.

Planned weeknight activities include a shared meal to meet local families, team building with other WIM participants, and activity and game nights. On other nights, students are encouraged to attend a variety of campus events such as sports, music, movies, crafts, and student organization meetings. Most campus events are free with a student ID.

Weekend trips are designed to showcase the beauty and diversity of the Midwest region, including trips to popular major cities such as Minneapolis/St. Paul and Chicago. Another weekend will include winter fun options such as snow tubing or ice skating 

Program includes:

  • Tuition & fees for 3 credits

  • Some meals (depends on housing choice)
  • All ground transportation, including to/from MSP airport
  • A variety of cultural activities in the community
  • Weekend excursions (local winter fun day, Minneapolis/St. Paul, & Chicago)
