UW-Stout's Bachelor of Science in Technology and Science Education degree provides teaching certification in technology education, as well as certification in biology, chemistry or physics. Graduates of this program are versatile educators and highly-sought as the STEM fields continue to grow. As a technology and science teacher you will create learning experiences that make these subjects meaningful for your students.

To fulfill the requirements of the program, you'll complete general education, technology, science and education courses. You'll also complete required teaching courses specifically in technology and science education. Pre-student teaching experiences in both middle and high school classrooms, as well as a semester-long student teaching experience, will be required.

The program curriculum was developed by faculty members from both the Applied Science program and the School of Education. The courses for the technology teaching major certification – and for the science teaching certification majors and minors – are aligned to the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards and approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. There are no other colleges/universities in the state of Wisconsin that offer a collaborative interdisciplinary degree in Technology and Science Education.

Admissions Requirements

New Freshmen

  • There are no additional requirements for new freshmen.

Transfer Students

  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher from the last institution attended.

Students who meet this requirement will be admitted to the university in their chosen Education major. Subsequent acceptance into a teacher education major and enrollment in professional education coursework will require successful completion of Benchmark I requirements. Additional information can be found at the School of Education website.

Students whose cumulative GPA is lower than the 2.75 will be reviewed and considered on a case-by-case basis for admission consideration.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Understand how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences (InTASC Standard 1).
  2. Understand individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards (InTASC Standard 2).
  3. Create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation (InTASC Standard 3).
  4. Understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) taught, and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content (InTASC Standard 4).
  5. Connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues (InTASC Standard 5).
  6. Understand and use multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making (InTASC Standard 6).
  7. Plan instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context (InTASC Standard 7).
  8. Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways (InTASC Standard 8).
  9. Engage in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner (InTASC Standard 9).
  10. Seek appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession (InTASC Standard 10).

Note: The program objectives are based on the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) standards, which have been adopted as the state teacher standards by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
