The Surface Water Science certificate will prepare you for work in freshwater careers or graduate school. You'll learn principles of surface water pollution, monitoring, and management in the contexts of human-impacted and natural systems.

The certificate is designed to provide students with a foundation in surface water science and management and then expand the student experience with specialized hands-on skill development in field and laboratory settings at UW-Stout and UW-Oshkosh. Students will gain practical skills in sampling, analyzing, and proposing management strategies for real-life surface water issues.

Program Objectives

  1. Explain the spatial and temporal dynamics of surface water systems
  2. Identify the causes of surface water impairment common in the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes Region
  3. Conduct fundamental research on water systems in preparation for careers in water resources or post-graduate study
  4. Evaluate the efficacy of various strategies to improve surface water quality in lake, river, and wetland ecosystems
