UW-Stout Summer STEAM (STEM + Art & Design) Experiences give students ages 14-17 the opportunity to learn from college instructors as they explore fields related to science, technology, engineering, art, or math. Dorm stays, camp games, and a panel with current UW-Stout students round out the experience and help highlight the value of creative and critical thinking.

STEAM (STEM + Art & Design) Camp Options
Acting (June 23-27, 2024)
Explore new performance avenues by learning to develop characters and theatre techniques using the Laban Movement Theory, comedy improvisational skills, Viewpoints Method and stage combat techniques. Students will make the most of this experience by bring a 60-second monologue to camp.
Roleplaying, Worldbuilding, and Storytelling (June 9-13, 2024)
Storytelling and imaginative play go hand-in-hand. In this creative workshop, we’ll start with some roleplaying sessions—creating characters, sketching stories, and building worlds. Then we’ll develop and expand these characters, stories, and worlds through active creative writing and storytelling exercises. Participants will create a variety of written works and stories for their creative portfolios.
Fashion Drawing & Draping (June 23-27, 2024)
Bring fashion designs to life by learning to drape on 3D forms. Students will learn to sketch using professional fashion figures and then translate their sketches to fabric on a 3D form. At the end of the week, students showcase their draped designs alongside their favorite design illustration.
Graphic Design & Printmaking (June 9-13, 2024)
In this summer's printmaking camp, "Design, Print, Communicate: Midwest Plants A-Z," students will explore historical and modern graphic styles through an unique lens. Throughout the week, they'll discover analog graphic skills, typography design, and how to print designs using ink and hand presses. By the end of the week, they’ll have their own plant/letter poster and participate in a print exchange with their campmates. (No previous Adobe CC experience is necessary.)
Metal Work (June 9-13, 2024)
Explore the unique medium of enameling, a powdered glass sifted onto a metal surface and fired in a kiln until it's fused and hardened. Students will create a variety of 2D and 3D works as they learn techniques for using powdered and liquid enamel, including stenciling, drawing, painting, photo decal, and raku pottery.
Microbiology: Genetics & DNA Analysis (June 23-27, 2024)
Explore the world of molecular biology and how scientists solve problems with DNA—from population studies to forensic identification to medical screening Students will collect field specimens, extract and quantify DNA, and then use various techniques to copy and study it. Campers will learn how to set up polymerase chain reactions, gel electrophoresis separation, and analyze DNA using micropipettes, high-speed centrifuges, electrophoresis tanks, spectrophotometers, fluorescent imagers, and even a DNA sequencer.
Video Game Design (June 23-27, 2024)
Level up your skills and learn the end-to-end process of creating video games using the same techniques and tools as the pros. After exploring the foundation of game creation—planning the fun—by sketching levels and character designs, students will start building a game by adding art, animation, programming logic, and sound effects. By the end of the week, we’ll be playtesting the games with class, family, and friends!
Video Game Development (July 14-18, 2024)

With expert guidance, hands-on projects, and collaborative challenges, unleash your creativity and bring your game ideas to life. Join us for an unforgettable journey into the world of game development!
Video Production (June 9-13, 2024)
Learn to make a movie—from story to production development to the big screen. Students will learn the film narrative structure and how to apply it in script writing and shot planning before learning to shoot professional-quality video. Students will then move to the editing room, with pacing help from a Stout instructor, to cut their movie using industry-standard software and prepare a final film for screening in Stout’s historic Harvey Hall Theatre.
