Ephemeral ponds are important and easily destroyed!
Conserving ephemeral ponds is a priority for multiple reasons:
- Ephemeral ponds are critical breeding habitat for declining species fo frogs and salamanders.
- The organisms that live in ephemeral ponds are uniquely adapted to these unique habitats. Organisms like fairy shrimp cannot survive in other environments.
- Due to their small size, ephemeral ponds are easily destroyed through fill and drainage during land development. Many people don't realize that they have ephemeral ponds on their properties or recognize ephemeral pond importance.
- Because they are difficult to detect using satellites or aerial photography, there is a lack of information about the extent of ephemeral ponds in Wisconsin.
